Counselling Placements in Edinburgh
Counselling Placement Opportunities for Trainee Counsellors
At The Edinburgh Counselling Service, we offer a small number of counselling placements for trainee counselling psychologists, counsellors and psychotherapists who are working towards a recognised counselling qualification and require client hours as part of their training.
Our placements provide a supportive, professional environment where trainees can develop confidence as practitioners while working ethically and safely with clients.
Clients working with trainee counsellors are always informed that their practitioner is in training and that they are receiving ongoing supervision through their training provider, in line with professional ethical guidelines.

A Supportive Environment for Developing Therapists
Beginning clinical practice can feel both exciting and daunting. Our placement is designed to offer a warm, nurturing environment where trainee counsellors can begin to find their own practitioner identity.
We aim to support trainees as they:
-
develop their counselling modality and therapeutic sense of self
-
build confidence working one to one with clients
-
deepen their reflective practice
-
integrate learning from their training course into clinical work
Placements at The Edinburgh Counselling Service are collaborative and collegial, allowing trainees to feel part of a professional counselling community.
Who Our Placements are Suitable For
Our placements are typically suitable for trainee counsellors who:
-
are studying towards a recognised counselling qualification
-
are motivated to develop their skills and professional identity as counsellors
-
require client hours as part of their course
-
have access to external supervision
-
demonstrate professionalism, strong interpersonal awareness, and a thoughtful approach to therapeutic work

Client Work During Your Counselling Placement
Trainee counsellors have the opportunity to work one-to-one with adult clients experiencing mild to moderate difficulties, such as:
-
anxiety and stress
-
low mood
-
relationship difficulties
-
life transitions
-
self-esteem issues
-
work-related stress
This allows trainees to develop practical therapeutic skills while ensuring that clients receive appropriate support within the scope of a training placement.
All trainees are expected to practice within the ethical framework of their professional body and maintain regular supervision.
