Counselling for Individuals

We provide a space where you will be heard and understood, and help you to gain insight and become better able to process your emotions. In your first meeting with your therapist, you will discuss the process of counselling and focus on what it is you want to gain from counselling. Together you will come up with strategies to use in everyday life, long after you have finished counselling with The Edinburgh Counselling Service. We help you to make connections (for instance identifying triggers that affect depressive symptoms), process your emotions and identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck. Our therapeutic approach is personalised to meet your needs. Using various theories and evidence-based methods, we will help you effectively meet your goals. Most of our therapists are predominantly trained in the psychodynamic and person-centred approaches, and we also incorporate other therapies such as compassion focused therapy, mindfulness and CBT. We have expertise in working with clients who struggle with confidence, anxiety, 'people-pleasing', low self-esteem and low belief. We also specialise in working with individuals who have experienced sexual violence. Collaboratively, we will develop a path of healing best suited for you. Please feel welcome to read the profiles of individual therapists to gain an idea of who may be the best fit for you.

A common misconception is that counselling is just about addressing a specific problem with practical strategies and tools. But this is only a very small part of what I offer.

Together we will:

  • Create concrete strategies you can use in everyday life

  • Make connections (such as identifying events that trigger your anxiety, overwhelm or feelings of not being good enough)

  • Discover practices and ways of being that help support your wellbeing

  • Help you to process your emotions

You will be able to:

  • Learn new skills

  • Feel heard and understood

  • Gain insight into your patterns and ways of relating and thinking

  • Be better able to process your emotions

  • Build self-awareness and self-understanding
Find a balance between caring for yourself and other people
Develop more intimate and authentic relationships—with yourself and others
Cultivate more meaning and purpose in life
